My Thoughts on "A Widow's Game": A True Crime Story That Made Me Go, "Seriously?!"

Movie poster for 'A Widow's Game' (La Viuda Negra) featuring a woman with an enigmatic expression, hinting at the film's dark, true-crime thriller nature. The title is prominently displayed.

So, I just watched this new movie on Netflix called A Widow's Game (or La Viuda Negra in Spanish), and let me tell you, it's based on a real story that dropped on Netflix on May 30th. And it made me wonder: do people really act this crazy in real life?

Here’s the wild true crime tale it's based on:

Okay, so, on the morning of August 16, 2017, this guy named Antonio, who was 36 and worked as an industrial engineer, left his house in Valencia, Spain, to go to work. He lived in this neighborhood called Patraix with his wife, Maje (her full name’s María Jesús, but everyone just calls her Maje).

Anyway, get this—he didn’t even make it out of the garage. Some guy had been literally hiding among the cars and just jumped out and stabbed him. Right there. He died on the spot. It’s honestly so scary.

At first, the cops were like, "Yeah, this wasn’t a robbery," because nothing was stolen. But then it all started to unravel, and it turns out there was this whole creepy plan going on… and Maje, his wife, was right in the middle of it. Like, it was totally premeditated and super twisted.

The movie (and the real story) focuses on Maje. Before they even got married, she cheated on her fiancé, Antonio. He actually forgave her, but she didn't stop. Even after they finally tied the knot, despite his family not being happy about the cheating, Maje, a nurse, continued having affairs with multiple men. She was seeing a guy at her hospital, a doctor there, and even someone she met at a club, among others.

She always had excuses. One day, she came home late and told Antonio she was out with a friend. But when she put her phone down, a message popped up. He saw it, and they had a huge fight. Antonio told her he couldn't do it anymore and she needed to leave. But Maje wasn't having it; she brought up how he bought the house and she'd renovated it as per their agreement. He told her, "Either you leave, or I will leave," but Maje just wouldn't budge.

So, she went to the doctor she was having an affair with—who also had a wife, a son, and his elderly mother at home. She manipulated him, claiming Antonio was abusing her. At first, the doctor was thrilled she was interested in him, even telling a friend he was amazed she'd picked him, calling her young (only 27) and "hot." She kept playing the sad victim around him, then eventually told him her husband was going to kill her and that she needed him to kill Antonio. She even showed him where her husband parked.

When the doctor did it, the police started investigating. They tapped her phone and found out about her affairs with different men, but they struggled to get a clear lead. At one point, she told the doctor to go to her apartment and wait for her, but she was actually with another guy. She needed a document sent, so she asked the doctor to help, saying she'd meet him at home. That's when the doctor realized she was seeing other people. He was heartbroken, and at some point, she even stopped picking up his calls. He casually told her if she loved other people, then she could go ahead and be with them.

The police were still on it, and eventually, they set up a sting. One day, she planned to meet the doctor at a restaurant. The police had everything staged, and when they started discussing the crime, both Maje and the doctor were arrested. Incredibly, the doctor initially defended her, claiming she didn't know anything and wasn't involved. The investigator warned him he was making a huge mistake and would go to jail for her, but he stuck to his word because he loved her.

He was detained, but at the final judgment, he retracted his statement, confirming that she had asked him to kill her husband because she claimed he was abusing her.

In my opinion, her husband never abused her. She was actually the one who hit him during their heated argument. She seems like a narcissist, wanting to control everyone and be with everyone. When things didn't go her way, she felt defeated and ended her husband's life.

I can't stop wondering what her family thinks, what his family thinks, what the doctor's family thinks, and also what the people she had affairs with think after seeing all the news.

My mum once told me something that really stuck with me: anyone who can cheat on their partner can kill their partner. Cheating is devious, and honestly, there's no such thing as "it was just a moment." Don't let anyone trick you into your own downfall. Stand firm on what you don't want and protect yourself. This is such a sad story—he was compassionate, and it led to his death.

In my opinion, the doctor is not a victim. He had his family but decided to cheat. I think his intention was maybe that, when he ended the life of Maje's husband, he could be with her, and perhaps they could get together and get married. He was also a selfish person who was only thinking about himself, and he met his match in Maje. They are both now in prison.

Have you seen this movie? What do you think about the story and about cheating? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Not seen the film. These days many don't know the real meaning of love; it means caring for someone more than you care for yourself.

    God bless.

    1. It's wild how much effort it takes to meet people these days. Not only do you have to do your research and vet them as friends first, but you also have to set boundaries and pray for a good one. Even good people can be influenced, so it's important to be careful.

    1. Selfishness and a love of material things is wild. Maje doesn't have love for anyone; she literally is that person who only thinks about herself and how she feels. Antonio, on the other hand, truly saw someone he loved, but Maje saw someone she could use as she pleased.

Thank you for taking time out to read and comment. I hope we all put our feelings in check and love wisely, while also giving our best.

    1. I mean, you said it all; that doctor already had it in him; he could have walked away but now he has cheated on his wife and risked his whole life for rubbish. People need to start praying every morning for their brains to function correctly each day.

  5. My wife follows some American court cases from time to time on YT. It's amazing what goes on, some well beyond what you describe here. These are real and nor reenactments.

    1. Self-love is important, yet I believe there's a fine line between genuine self-love and becoming self-centered to the detriment of others. It's tragic how many individuals have suffered, or are no longer with us, as a result of relationships with self-centered people.

  11. When I read the story I thought 'seriously?' Then I must say that maybe in a crime novel or a movie one thinks about it, but in real life you hope it doesn't happen. More and more often lately I find myself wondering if real life is inspired by movies or the other way around. Anyway, I completely agree with your mother, which is why I believe that in friendship and love one must always be sincere!

    1. I was so surprised at Maje's behavior; she was so bent on having it all, even if it meant stepping on everyone's emotions. Sadly this is real life.

  12. I'll check it out. I've just finished Zero Day about a cyber attack in the US, it has Robert Di Nero in it and for a man in his 80s I thought he was really good. I also finished Dept. Q, which is set in Edinburgh, which I really enjoyed too. :-D

  14. My jaw literally dropped to the floor when I read the story and realized that it was actually based on a real life one! I actually thought "seriously?!" too. I'm sure it makes for a great movie, but I still can't get over the fact that it really happened! On the other hand, I'm sure you can't make up anything this crazy! xxx

    1. I was equally shocked when I found out it was a real-life story and not just a movie. I was almost thinking 'no, no, no' while watching it; I mean, she should have just walked away, but no, she decided to do it her way, not any other.

  17. I never seen it, I don't have any services or tv. I read alot and there is a genre with crazy plots like these, too many if you ask me. People just love to follow shows or books like this. It's sad but it's how life seems to be these days.

  21. I haven't seen this film, but the wife sounds like she is super crazy. And it's so crazy that there are real life events like this. It's sad too. I need to check and see if it's playing here in on our US Netflix. Thanks for sharing

  22. That's a very interesting story and they do say truth is stranger than fiction. I have known of two men who have cheated on their wives. I can honestly say even before I found this out, I never trusted either of them. They just gave off bad vibes to me. No, that doctor is not a victim, he is as guilty as she is.

Melody, that reality surpasses fiction, and usually in a negative way!!

  26. Unusual to have a female protagonist, making the plot more interesting. It sounds so unbelievable that it must be true. I didn't notice this on Netflix otherwise I would have watched it. Your analysis that she is a narcissis is probably correct as a narcissis is incapable of love.

  31. I'm incredibly sorry to be this late visiting. Flooding, evacuations, and removing water in my basement have kept me busy trying to keep the mold from forming.

I don't have Netflix, but I'm never surprised what one person will do for another when they are in love. "Love is blind" is not just a saying. It's a truth.

Thanks beyond belief for joining Bleubeard and me this week.

“Give Thanks To God” Thursday, June 5, 2025

Key Verse “And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God” (Luke 17:15). Text —Luke 17:12-19 Message According to Melody Beattie, “Gratitude [thanksgiving] unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.” Thanking God is a way of expressing gratitude towards a benefactor, and doing so pleases the Lord. That is why when one of the ten men He healed returned to glorify or thank Him, He was surprised that the other nine did not bother to do so too. As a Christian, giving thanks is a mark of contentment and humility. It reveals your positive response to His goodness and mercy. It is also a mark of obedience because the Scripture commands us to give thanks. This is because God knows that giving thanks is good for our relationship with Him and good for our wellbeing. Failing to thank God in all things reveals your human tendency to selfishness. Thanking God in trying times shows that you recognise His power to meet your needs. Quote Giving thanks is good Challenge Always show gratitude to God for His goodness. Prayer for today My God, help me to appreciate you always, in Jesus’ name.
